The food served, while traditional, didn’t always hit the mark, and the lack of alternative dining options was disappointing.

The rooms were adorned with beautiful traditional tatami flooring, making one feel completely immersed in the Japanese culture. The accessibility around the property was superb, with gentle transitions leading to various relaxation areas. I truly felt at home here.

Staying at Hoeiso was a blend of beauty and small challenges. The ryokan is surrounded by lush greenery, giving a serene feel right from the start. The outdoor onsen near the river offered an amazing atmosphere, especially at night. Sitting in the warm water under the stars felt magical. The futons provided were surprisingly comfy, making sleep enjoyable. The overall decor is traditional and adds to the cultural immersion. The staff were attentive, eager to accommodate requests. The dinner was beautifully presented, highlighting local cuisine vibes, but it was a bit too adventurous for my taste. Some dishes felt unusual without being particularly delicious. Breakfast had more familiar items, which helped. I noticed a slight musty smell in the room, perhaps from age or previous smoking, which wasn't pleasant. Also, only one small towel for the onsen felt inadequate. A restaurant nearby could offer a familiar menu for those with kids. All considered, the onsen experience was the highlight, despite the food being hit or miss. I’d suggest coming prepared for the unique dishes and perhaps bringing extra towels if you enjoy bathing daily.

The location was incredibly convenient with a bus stop right outside, making it easy to explore the area. However, the bath access could be better managed, as the hours were somewhat limited.

great stay but minor timing issues

The views of the mountainside were breathtaking, especially at sunrise. The staff was incredibly friendly and went out of their way to assist us, including providing umbrellas when it was raining. The set meals featured unique local ingredients that truly enhanced our experience and added a special touch. The picturesque mountain view made our stay memorable.

I wish the private onsen hours were more flexible.

We absolutely loved our private outdoor onsen the night of our stay, then we each used the male/female outdoor onsens the next morning before breakfast. The views were beautiful! !

The initial welcome was incredibly cold and uninviting. I expected more guidance, especially concerning how to enjoy the ryokan experience fully, from wearing a yukata to understanding the onsen. It was frustrating to discover we couldn't use the interior onsen due to tattoo restrictions. this policy feels outdated and alienating. Additionally, the condition of the rooms leaves much to be desired, feeling somewhat neglected.

Soaking in the outdoor onsen next to the river while birds chirped all around was a magical experience! I also loved lounging in my traditional room with tatami mats and enjoying the delicious meals. The only downside was the chilly bathroom, but it really didn’t stop me from enjoying my stay. 😊
